Prosthesis Adjustments

Because your mouth changes, your prosthesis must adapt too

A well-adjusted prosthesis makes all the difference in everyday life. It allows you to eat without pain, speak clearly, and smile with confidence—without discomfort, sores, or instability. However, over time, even a well-designed prosthesis may become uncomfortable. At Clinique de Denturologie Talbot, we offer comprehensive prosthesis adjustment services to ensure your prosthesis continues to function optimally, year after year.

Why Adjust a Prosthesis?

Contrary to popular belief, a prosthesis does not remain perfectly adapted forever. Your mouth naturally changes over time—even without teeth:

  • The gums evolve
  • Jawbone resorption can occur
  • Muscle tone changes
  • The temporomandibular joint may become slightly misaligned
  • Chewing habits may shift

These anatomical changes can lead to a loss of prosthesis stability, uneven pressure on the gums, pain, or localized injury. They can also cause difficulties in speech or chewing, reduce overall comfort, and lead to premature wear of the prosthesis or its components.

Regular adjustments help maintain all functional benefits of your prosthesis without needing early replacement.

Signs Your Prosthesis Needs an Adjustment

Here are some signs that it may be time to consult:

  • The prosthesis shifts or moves while talking or eating
  • It creates pressure points or mouth sores
  • You experience pain in the gums or jaw
  • There’s discomfort in the cheeks or tongue
  • You notice asymmetry in your smile or facial expressions
  • You avoid certain foods due to discomfort
  • The prosthesis clicks or makes noise while speaking

Don’t settle for discomfort—your mouth deserves a precise adjustment for maximum well-being.

Types of Adjustments Offered

At Clinique de Denturologie Talbot, we offer various types of adjustments depending on your needs:

Localized Adjustments

Perfect for irritation, pressure points, or minor sores. We identify the issue and make targeted modifications without altering the overall structure.

Rebasing

Rebasing refreshes the internal base of the prosthesis without replacing the teeth. It adapts the fit to your current gum shape while maintaining the visible portion. Can often be completed within 24 hours.

Soft Base: When Is It Recommended?

In some cases, we use a soft liner inside the prosthesis to improve comfort. This durable yet flexible material is particularly helpful for sensitive gums. Recommended when:

  • There is significant ridge atrophy
  • Mild discomfort persists despite other adjustments

The soft base acts as a shock absorber. While less durable than a hard base, it’s an excellent temporary or transitional solution.

Occlusion Adjustment

If your bite is misaligned, it can cause imbalances, muscle tension, or pain. We evaluate and correct the occlusion so your jaws work in harmony.

Adjustments for All Types of Prosthesis

We adapt our adjustments to suit the type, age, and structure of your prosthesis. These include:

  • Full prosthesis with rigid or soft bases
  • Partial prosthesis with clasps or attachments
  • Implant-supported prosthesis needing precise occlusion adjustments

Our experienced denturists and in-house lab allow us to treat even complex prosthesis cases efficiently.

The Adjustment Process: What to Expect

Each adjustment begins with a thorough assessment. At Clinique Talbot, we aim to identify the source of discomfort or instability and resolve it effectively.
Typical steps include:

  1. Listening to your symptoms and daily habits
  2. Clinical observation of the prosthesis in your mouth
  3. Marking pressure zones
  4. On-site technical adjustments
  5. Immediate re-test to confirm comfort and function

Most issues are resolved during the first visit.

Professional, Personalized Adjustments

Every mouth is unique—and so is every adjustment. We always begin with a full oral evaluation and a detailed discussion of your symptoms. We perform both functional and aesthetic analysis of the prosthesis, followed by in-mouth testing after each modification. Follow-ups are planned as needed to ensure long-term comfort.
Thanks to our on-site lab, most adjustments can be made the same day—with immediate results.

The Importance of Regular Follow-Up

Even without pain, we recommend yearly visits to check your prosthesis’s fit. This helps:

  • Prevent sores or irritation
  • Adjust gradually as anatomy changes
  • Extend the lifespan of your prosthesis
  • Maintain optimal chewing function
  • Preserve a natural and balanced appearance

Don’t Wait for Discomfort to Set In

A simple adjustment can dramatically improve your experience. At Clinique de Denturologie Talbot, we believe a well-fitted prosthesis is essential to your quality of life. One appointment may be all it takes to restore your comfort.
